That’s an interesting question, djhardwood. As do you, I believe he’s content on the Revenge and would never betray them. But the question was raised - How Loyal Is Scratch To The Revenge and Its Crew?
The Story Begins:
It’s a well-known fact that a cat’s best sense is their hearing, followed closely by their eyesight. Well, shortly before Halloween, when Scratch was staring at nothing, as cats often do, he noticed that the Green Ship was edging ever closer to the Revenge. Curious but not wanting to be seen, he belly-crawled to the railing. Now, not only could Scratch see the Green Pirates, the steady breeze carried their words to the him: Halloween; steal safe; cat costume. At first, it made little sense, and then, it suddenly did. Disguised as Halloween-cat-tricksters, they were planning to steal the Revenge’s safe that held the largest treasure he had ever seen. He had to work quickly.
Moving silently, as only a cat can, Scratch raced into the dingy room and went immediately to the safe. Opening it, he looked inside. So much treasure: where to put it, where to put it all? Frantically he scanned the room, and saw the only possible place. Rushing to Henry’s bedroom, he ripped the sheet off the bed and stole his slippers, then ran back to the safe. If he was lucky, it just might work.
He stuffed the slippers into the hole to plug it, and as he spread the sheet wide, he heard the rowboat scraping against the side of the Revenge. They would be onboard within minutes. Frantically he clawed the treasure from the safe and threw it onto the sheet. And then, as he was wadding the sheet tightly around the treasure, he heard Henry and Nate laughing at the tricksters’ costumes. (Continued on next Comment.)
The newcomers were coming aboard as Scratch pushed the treasure into its hiding place. Immediately, he turned and filled the safe with everything he found in the trash barrels that sat alongside it. Then, as he spun the safe’s dial, he left the dingy room. Throwing a glance at the disguised Green Pirates, Scratch couldn’t stop the low growl that was building in his throat. The utter gall: The taller of the two looked exactly like him.
It wasn’t until evening that Henry and Nate discovered their safe had been stolen, and they declared immediate war with the Green Ship. But then, just moments later, they discovered the empty trash barrels they had filled only that morning, and they declared instant peace. And when they discovered the Captain’s bedsheet bulging out of the toilet, and pulled it free, they laughed long and hard. They never knew the how and the why of the treasure being moved, but for some reason, they both thought of Scratch before they dismissed the idea.
And for Scratch himself: It was just one of the many good deeds that he regularly performed that no one ever knew about. The End
