Well, as I remember the Cold War Era, there were plenty of wars, we were beginning to bring about climate change (as some forecasted), automation was threatening our workers’ livelihoods, and influenza killed many. The Cold War wasn’t the only thing that troubled the Earth.
Life seemed simpler then. I was a child when rockets became powerful enough to deliver intercontinental nuclear weapons, a teen when we landed on the moon, a tween when we sent a robot to Saturn. Now in my old age we’ve taken an infrared camera to the edge of the Universe. Reality is stranger than fiction, but it’s never simple.

The world has never been safe. The only thing that has changed is 24/7 news reporting.
