Over the years, I have been to a few driving ranges where you hit golf balls into water. These balls are made to float, and a slow current takes them to a place where it is very easy to scoop them out of the water to be hit again.

How about using internal locating tags? Don’t want to mess the aerodynamics. (Too easy for an excuse.)
