The Romans accomplished amazing things, and like most accident empires they fell hard. Even still, Western civilization is what it is because of the Romans. This doesn’t demean other cultures, and many others have effected us. But I think none as much, for good or for ill, as the Romans.

I never noticed before – Vero wears her earrings outside of her hair?

They did not fall HARD, it took more than a thousand years.

The Romans would have done a lot better with decimal notation, spaces, capital letters, and other punctuation.

I have to say I have not thought about the ancient Romans in about two thousand years. I know they don’t think about me.

Viva Italia! But all of the comments above about the accomplishments of other cultures is critical for everyone to understand. With all of the textbook revisions today, the next generation will not be able to write thise comments.

I asked my wife about this, and she said she thinks about Ancient Rome and the Roman Empire a few times a year. They come up in my thinking at least once a day. So, at least in our house, it’s true.

Footnote: She has been to Rome, and I haven’t.

I think of the Ottoman Empire every time I relax with my feet up to watch TV.

I actually prefer the Germans myself, exxcept for the Nazis of course, but that is only 12 years out of a 1,000 year culture.
