According to our best guess, the Moon used to be part of the Earth, and got blasted into orbit by a quite severe strike by a random bit of space debris, where it wobbled like Jell-O until it cooled and became a smooth orb of mostly iron, with a sweet cream frosting of lighter elements. It has taken a bit of abuse since then, but it used to be pretty sleek.
