I feel this leads to Amanda somehow closing the courthouse, leading to the inevitable new cat.

When it rains, it pours. Same for snow in North Dakota, and cats.

There’s always a chance. Sometimes they just show up, that’s how we got all of ours.

Even if it’s snowing, the wheels of justice keep turning. They might need chains but…

Hubby told me I couldn’t have any more cats (we had his and mine at the time). I saw a kitten I liked, and kept talking about it. He adopted the kitten for me and named him Mr. Nomo D. Kats, when hubby died I got two more cats that year.

Depending on territorial considerations, there can be a limit on the possible number of cats. We never managed to have more than two.

Here is the history of the expression about raining and pouring. It was not about when something bad happens, it happens a lot. From Wikipedia: Morton Salt’s logo features the “Morton Salt Girl”, a young girl walking in the rain with an opened umbrella and scattering salt behind her from a cylindrical container of table salt, and has been one of the ten best-known symbols in the United States.19 The company’s logo and its motto, “When it rains, it pours”, both originating in a 1914 advertising campaign, were developed to illustrate the point that Morton Salt was free flowing even in rainy weather. The company began adding magnesium carbonate as an absorbing agent to its table salt in 1911 to ensure that it poured freely.20
