I used to work in an old warehouse which had been cubicled into office space, but there was a whole second floor of catwalks and stuff above the dropped ceiling that was full of critters—squirrels, raccoons, possums, mice … and bats (we were just a parking lot away from a coastal lagoon). Every now and then one of them would find its way into the people area and, since the men I worked with tended to be scared of wild animals, I was the one who took it upon herself to deal with them. Once I chased a mouse out of my desk (then had to fumigate it), I repeatedly trapped the same half-grown possum and dumped it in the parking lot (until it grew too fast for me to catch), and have shooed any number of bats back outside, telling them to get back to work eating the millions of mosquitos that bred in the lagoon. Little tree frogs would come in out of the rain, then sit there gasping on the cold, dry linoleum until I picked them up and put them back into the rain. Then there was the weekend when squirrels chewed through all our computer cables, putting us out of business for a few hours. And I can’t forget the little lizard which gave me the side eye from an eye level cubical partition as I walked by (I just grabbed it and carried it outside). And don’t get me started on stink bugs—handy tip: NEVER squash a stink bug or spray it with Raid!!! Just tease it on to a stiff piece of paper, carry it outside, and throw it off the paper as far as you can!
I love bats! They are a major component in my Halloween decor. The first thing you see When you walk in my apt, and the last thing when you walk out too. That one stayed up all year as it is small and hanging from the door’s peephole. This year I added one with glow in the dark eyes. She is currently sitting on my (live) Christmas tree, where she may remain throughout the year… Unless she occasionally finds other plants comfy.
Why do people freak out still? Only one species bites people, rabies is hard to catch and they are too good a bunch of fliers to get too close to your head. Even if you do have mosquitos bothering you. Which they consider snacks.
