Interestingly, the census bureau just put out a projection of US population going to the end of the century at different levels of immigration. The worst case was the close the border case, with zero immigration. It resulted in a steep decline in US population. BTW that would trigger a deep depression, as industries all through the economy lost productivity due to the lack of a workforce and prices soared.
Be careful what you wish for. . . . you might get it.
The reason so many people are fleeing the hellholes that many Latin American countries have turned into is because they’ve been overrun by the criminal cartels engaged in the ruthless competition to supply drugs for the bottomless American market. Yes, it’s our own insane, expensive, ineffective, counterproductive War on Drug-Using Americans that’s the root cause of the social disruption south of our border. We’re financing the chaos and inhumanity with billions of American dollars every year.
Don’t even get me started on Afghanistan (home to 90% of the world’s opium poppies) where American dollars financed both sides of our longest war.
It’s also the reason why the modern USA is the most imprisoned society in world history. We don’t only have a higher percentage of people behind bars than a repressive dictatorship like China, we have a higher number of prisoners. (For comparison purposes, China’s population is about 4 times our own.)
In a sane world, all those ambitious hustlers we’re currently throwing in the slammer would be the modern equivalent of the brewers, distributors, and tavern-keepers who set up shop after the repeal of Prohibition and are now law-abiding, tax-paying, job-providing, softball-team-sponsoring pillars of the community. There’d still be drug abuse, of course, just as there’s still alcohol abuse, but we’d treat it as a medical problem, not a legal one.
Wanna fix to so-called “crisis” on our southern border? Repeal Prohibition. Again. For all the same reasons.
