Mittens was so tough when he was a kitten, he often found himself in the pen (a playpen lined with a fluffy blanket) There he established himself as head of The Felt Rhino Gang, and had daily tussles against Muffin McPuffles, the ferocious Persian kitten capo of The Catnip Banana Crew. Man, it was brutal, every kitten was Kung Fu fighting, until they all keeled over and had a nap.

I have a photo of my cat Johnny Depp sitting in such an odd way that he looks like he is in the cockpit of a racing car. It’s a cat thing.

Mittens may be tough and fancy, but Bear is a medium hair tortie. She’s extra tough and fancy.

When I moved in, there was an orange cat “Tank” who lived next door. He would feint at my cats then chase them when they ran.

After a couple of years of this, I got Colette, who was not only a fancy kitten but completely fearless. On her first unleashed walk with me outside, Tank noticed her, walked up and made the feint. Instead of running, she took two steps forward and sniffed his nose.

It was the wildest change I have ever seen. Tank had an epiphany. He was like a prize fighter who suddenly found himself in a poetry contest. Tank turned away. Walked in a circle for a moment to convince himself this was really happening before coming back and sniffing Colette’s nose.

After that they were fast friends for years until Tank moved away. Colette liked nothing better than to ambush Tank and turn back at the very last second. He thought it was hilarious. Tank would chase away any cat that threatened her and he was always welcome to come inside and mooch on her food.
