In the 1960s, I was a summer camp counselor at a farm and horseback riding camp near Modesto, CA. There was an irrigation canal running alongside the camp where the kids would play and cool off—concrete-lined, about 15 feet wide and about 4 feet deep. (The camp had a regular swimming pool, but it was for more structured activities). There was a bridge where I sat to supervise, and a big long raft on a pulley that went back and forth. Unfortunately, the first week of camp, one of the kids stepped on something sharp and cut his foot. Thereafter anyone playing in the canal was required to wear tennis shoes. That saved a lot of feet … and ruined a lot of tennis shoes!
