Not that I’m going to coffee shops to meet people, but I never understood how that works. I guess you need something out that is interesting enough so that others will strike up a conversation, but not too much so that you seem too busy to bother? I guess in Cathy’s case, at least the man started talking to her. If she wasn’t on the phone (or faking it), she could continue the conversation. Of course, we all know our dear Cathy will just freak out.

Now with people reading books on featureless devices, you cannot even use the old standby of asking about the book based on its cover. The world has become the “fortress”.
