The year I retired, the office “look” for women was cleavage. Lots and LOTS of young, perky bosoms, and mine were resting on my abdomen. Oh, I was so GLAD to leave!!
I have never once walked into any business office and seen anyone’s belly. I won’t say any business establishment, because sometimes stores and such are different. But offices? Never.
I used to work in software, which is typically more casual than most businesses. I remember when it was unusual to wear jeans in the office, and I think some young women occasionally wore “going out” outfits (probably on a Friday). But in general, most people dress for the job, especially since many want to move up in position. I.e. dress for the position that you want.
Hello Cathy friends! Happy Monday! Happy Labor Day for those in areas that celebrate! Have a great day, all!
Wow! A lot of us here have worked or are still working in IT (I am still working). Since most of the offices I worked in the IT department was buried in the basement so business casual was the norm even if the people in higher floors had to be more professionally attired. The last place I worked the network department was on the main floor (developers were in the basement as usual) and on of the technicians did wear very short skirts and low cut tops. She knew she had the body for it and used her looks and dress (like sitting on a filing cabinet with legs apart) to get what she wanted from her male supervisor. Funny though, when the end came and the entire IT department was terminated (our division was given to another company to manage) she was one of the first to go.
For those of you who have a holiday today – enjoy this fine Monday. For those of you who are working today – enjoy it anyway.
I remember being a little disconcerted when a fellow professor at the university showed up in a mini skirt and flip flops. I think professional dress is called for when in front of a classroom.
And I remember the first time I ever dared to wear slacks to the office…they were lined wool slacks from Sacks, I wore them because we were moving and I was crawling around on top of file cabinets packing stuff. Still, my boss said he couldn’t believe I would wear slacks to work.
