I can testify to the change in size of dinner services. I have a complete set of china bought by my mother in the 1930’s and it’s amazing how small everything is. Not just the plates, but also soup bowls that hold about half a cup, tea cups that you could empty in one swallow. It’s beautiful and I’d like one of my grandchildren to take it, but no one has a use for it or space. It sits hidden away in a closed cabinet and awaits its fate.
This is why we have become obese nation. In order to maximize profits, each food transaction has to have the largest dollar value. Larger servings give the illusion of more value for money, even though such servings provide an entire day’s calories and are not healthy.
It was different when more jobs involved tremendous amounts of manual labor. When I was boy, I worked on a tobacco farm. We ate four enormous meals a day and I was skinny as a rail.
Yup—over the years, portion sizes have gone up, up, up, while appetites have (I assume) stayed mostly the same. Better grab the wheelbarrow to help me out of dinner …

Waistlines are bigger, too. Sixty years ago I was struggling to gain weight, and eating more in every meal than I can have in two days now.

A normal size drip coffee in Europe is 4 or 5 oz, not the 12 – 31 oz Starbucks monstrosities

We could all benefit from going back to normal (sane!) portion sizes…

I use my salad plates for dinner every day. It keeps my portions down and I’m just as full.
