Ernie Bushmiller was genius. Such simple fun comics that everyone could enjoys. Always brings a smile across your face. Very nice and neat concepts which is so nicely and neatly executed. The realism of kid wondering if ice thick enough to walk and the unrealism of cartoons where NO! is appear, something that can only happens in cartoons, both the reality of the situation and the fun cartoony solution for the boy’s question is masterfully presented in just three simple panels which is creates a great funny. Less is said and more is done. Unlike some unfortunately unfunny comic these days with kids endlessly talking like adults talking and keeps talking too wordy speeches about some maths class and all and thinking how some kid looks like if they is has bad day. What kid even thinks like that. Kids is no fun if they is act like some smartypants adults in some workplace comic. Alas how fun comics that once was is no fun anymore.
Today’s strip reminds me of a Mandy annual from the 1970s. On the front cover, Mandy was ice skating and other kids were falling on their butts. Mandy’s dog Patch was behind her with a cushion for her to land on if she slipped. On the back cover, Mandy had not fallen on her butt but fallen through some thin ice. Patch was now sitting on the cushion that had been in his mouth.
Being a transplant to the Thousand Islands region has given me a plethora of stories about respecting a frozen river. My late father in law once told me of a family back in the 1970s that tried (stupidly) to drive their car across the river to Kingston Ontario. They were reported missing and the car was never found. On a less depressing note, my wife told me that when she was in high school she and her friends would pool their money to buy a clunker car and push it out onto the ice. When they wanted to do their skating/hockey stuff, they’d first check to see if the car was still there.

The first panel looks like a wall. I thought Sluggo was trying to look through a whole like at the ball games…
