It’s wonderful to see the kids having fun together. Since last Labor Day, when Nancy wanted to go on a picnic and Sluggo had to go to a dance with his cousin, this has been a busy year for the kids. They have gone to movies, gone to baseball and football games, got the kids together for games, planted gardens, attended a rodeo, Nancy and Pee Wee played Neighborhood Newspaper and Nancy even visited a big department store back in the days when elevators still had operators who decided when the elevators went up and down. I heard a guy talking on the radio the other day and he said that he thought some of the problems which modern kids have are developing because kids no longer have a time or place to just go out and play. I am inclined to agree. We didn’t get TV in our town until I was a Senior in High School – so we are the last generation which grew up without TV interrupting our play time. I saw an old Leave it to Beaver episode the other day and Beaver and his friend Larry walked to the store to bring home some groceries for his Mom. We used to be able to do stuff lie that. We lived in a small town. Our mother would call one of the Mom and Pop grocery stores in our town and tell them what she wanted, then my sister and I would ride our bikes to the store and carry the groceries home in the baskets on our bikes. It is very sad that many parents no longer feel it is safe for kids to enjoy that sort of freedom as a general rule.
