Butts toughen up after awhile. Either that, or the nerves die.

As a kid in the late 50s I was able to do every part of bike maintenance except tuning spokes (I still can’t do that well and quickly). And that did include patching the tubes. Because where I grew up, there was a plant called “goat head” whose thorns would actually puncture an inner tube right through the tire… at least occasionally. And other even tougher sharp things. But I did figure out that my awesome looking bike was HEAVY, whereas my big brothers minimalist bike probably weighed half what mine did. My second bike was a lot more basic than the first. But it did have three “in the hub” gears.

Split seats for guys.

When he was 16 my brother got a job at a bicycle shop. He must’ve been very good at it, b/c my Dad brought home a derelict bike he got from one of his co-workers & my brother completely rebuilt it for me. Grey fenders, red body & everything else black. I left it w/my parents when I moved out & my Dad took to riding it to town!!!

When I was young, banana seats were the COOL thing. But I just thought they hurt.

A face full of slush if you didn’t have a front fender. A wet streak up your back if you didn’t have a back fender.

Not so much sore as numb!

Ask Santa. He’s used to dealing with pains in the butt all day.

Fussy bikes? I’ve heard of Hussy bikes.

Every time I ride my bike I’m reminded that I could use a new seat. The bike’s seat is fine, but my seat is over fifty years old.
