When the Constitution was ratified, the opportunities for a Member of the House of Representatives to profit off their office were modest compared to what they would be a few decades later, but enough for most to try to stick around for more than a single term. The corruption we have now pales in comparison to what (mostly) Republican Congressmen were doing after the Civil War. those of you have a passing familiarity with the building of railroads from 1865 to the early 20th Century, know what I’m talking about.
The Founders thought that gentlemen would run the government in an honorable and amicable fashion, where what was good for the male white property-owning elite was good for everyone.
The Founders created a constitution that is designed top prevent corruption by LIMITING THE POWER OF GOVERNEMNT! However, since the constitution has been subverted and overtly ignored for over a century now (mainly staring with Woodrow Wilson), government has grown – as has corruption.
The solution to corruption in government is to cut government down to about 90% of its current size, scope and power. Leave it only to prevention of force and fraud. Military and courts should be main goal. The rest should be mostly in hands of state.
They never considered brib….campaign contributions because they saw no need for political parties. They were very short sighted. They built this country on duplicity without realizing the incapability of humans to get along in masses.
We already have term limits. It’s called ‘the vote’. Stop trying to limit the vote, but expand voting rights. WE, the People will choose who should be limited.
It is unfortunate that some senators may prioritize their own political future over the needs and desires of the people. In the pursuit of retaining their seat, some senators may make decisions that do not align with the interests of the public they serve. This can ultimately lead to a lack of progress and change in areas that require attention and improvement. It is crucial that elected officials prioritize the well-being of the people and work towards creating positive change for the greater good, rather than solely focusing on their own re-election.
Arizona has term limits. When our career politicians hit the term limit in the House they jump over to the Senate. And when they term out there they switch back to the House. And we keep voting for these clowns.
Maybe we should start by getting rid of partisan gerrymandering, and let voters choose their representatives, instead of letting representatives choose their voters.
I’m a little surprised, since they were replacing a Monarchy, that they didn’t recognize that some might be more interested in power than economics. And of course there’s the idea that with power comes a strong possibility of economic advantage. Look at Thomas etc.
Also, the average life expectancy back then was such that politicians (other, perhaps, than Benjamin Franklin) would not be expected to live well into their 70s or 80s.
