This actually happened: I was walking my dog one morning and came across a ‘dead’ possum lying on the sidewalk. I flipped it over just to see if it was true what they said. Sure enough, it flipped itself back over…
In my kitchen, one pleasant Spring morning, I was washing breakfast dishes and enjoying the cool breeze blowing through the screen door. My little dog started barking excitedly, staring into the back yard. I opened the door to let him out. Then I saw that he had been triggered by the sight of a possum climbing up a tree trunk.
The possum glances disdainfully at the dog, knowing that he is too high up to fear him. But when I step into the yard… he realizes that I am tall enough to pose a threat. He hisses… and then drops from tree to ground… and plays dead!
What an actor! Splayed out on his back, eyes shut, spittle bubbling out of his mouth, stone still, unresponsive even when I gently poke him with a stick. I picked up the dog and went back in the kitchen, watching through the kitchen window.
Mr. Possum Boy didn’t move for at least five minutes… but then lifted his head, looked around, and lammed it out of the yard.
