    Remember the schoolboy version?

    Rudolph the Red-Nosed Cowboy

    Had a very shiny gun,

And if you ever saw it,

You would turn around and run!

    Then one foggy Christmas eve,

    The Sheriff came to say,

“Rudolph with your gun so bright,

Won’t you shoot my wife tonight?"

Most people get by for most of the year, but then Christmas puts them in the red. Many retail stores are in the red most of the year, but then Christmas puts them in the black.

    Hmm…

This reminds me of a song lyric by the late Frank Jacobs in the 70’s Mad paperback “Sing Along with Mad” (illustrated by Al Jaffee). One of the lyrics was the song “Christmas Bills” (sung to the tune of “Jingle Bells”):Christmas bills, Christmas Bills.Piled on the floor.Every day, the mailman comesto bring a dozen more.Christmas bills, Christmas bills. How the stores will swear, when they soon discover thatmy bank account is bare.Dashing off the checks, all in great amounts.Mailing them away, knowing they will bounce.Bill collectors come, notify my boss. Now they get my salary, my life’s a total loss.Ohhhhhhh…Christmas bills, Christmas bills, making me lament. Now I’m up against the wall, from all those gifts I sent, oh.Christmas bills, Christmas bills.I’ll go broke and then,,when next Christmas rolls around, I’ll do it all again!
