“straightforward humor that doesn’t depend on local cultural awareness”…right, because jokes about meat rationing during the war are something we can ALL relate to…
And, who is Pierre S. De Beaumont, and why is he signing Bud Fisher’s name to vintage Mutt and Jeff comic strips? I’m assuming Pierre was the last cartoonist to do Mutt and Jeff while it was running or something, and no one thought to change the byline when they switched to reruns?
Not that I’m complaining mind you…I wish there were web archives of more vintage strips, many are much better than what’s being done today.
It WAS a wonderful country in 1946. A man could support his entire family on his pay alone without his wife having to work. Gas was about 25 cents a gallon. You could take your entire family to a movie knowing it would be good even if you knew nothing about it before hand. Homosexuals stayed hidden as they should. Killing and molesting children was unthinkable. Children still prayed in schools. People still believed in marrage before sex. Yes, Jeff, it was a wonderful country then. But we are the new Roman Empire now! Hail Caesar Obama!

I wonder if Jeff’s last name is Lehman.

PS – Actually, two missing Sunday strips are up now; the ones for the 6th and the 13th. (And I commented first on both of ‘em!)

In 1946 this would have been ‘offbeat’. Today it’s just too true-to-life.
