There is a science fiction story, Bradbury, I think, about a man who wound up alone on Mars after a quick evacuation. Highly automated cities kept going and he had the run of the planet. To keep himself cheered up, he set up a series of automated phone calls to call himself at future times. At first, it seemed like a good idea. Eventually he began, like Horace, to dread those calls.

“Are you up?”

“Yes. Yes, I’m up!!
