You may get a billy goat for Christmas, Mitt, and then what would you do?

True story: The only thing my mother hated more than dogs was cats. I was not allowed a dog, which I desperately wanted. So I set out on a mission. I started begging her mercilessly for a cat, day after day after day, thinking that eventually I would surprise her and ask for a dog, and she would be so relieved I shut up about the cat that she would say yes to the dog.

Instead, she surprised me with a cat. I was totally shocked.

It turned out, I was a cat person and didn’t know it until I got my first cat.

It turned out, also, my mother loved having pets and from that day on, Mom always had dogs and cats.
