This touched my 43-year-old heart. I think I admire this strip as being deeper than expected for a strip about a stereotypical twelve-year-old boy. I appreciate the tasteful subtlety of Nate’s romance, its lack of behavior that should be over-the-top and inappropriate for a twelve-year-old. They don’t even say “I love you” (but suggest it in their actions), and they don’t discuss getting married or having children or other things that they should feel no pressure to discuss.

I also appreciate how, after so many silly crushes where Nate says “grrrowwwl” at Jenny or some other girl—stuff one rolls one’s eyes at while thinking “In a hurry to grow up, are you?”—Nate is obviously maturing even though he’s designed to be twelve year after year (I think?). Lincoln Pierce pulled off a seeming contradiction.

This week is going to leave the biggest warm fuzzy feeling in my insides.
