as david said, i like the candy, chocolates specifically, that the womenfolk are obliged to give us guys on valentine’s day here in japan. the custom extends to the workplace, where japan hasn’t quite caught up to other countries in terms of sexist behavior and practices, to the extent that there’s a phrase for the practice of passing out candy to guys you don’t even like – giri choko, “obligatory chocolates.” it’d be mean to leave some guys out, goes the thinking, so all the guys in the office receive the cheapest candy the ladies can find… ☺
