OMG, what memories this brings back! Back in the 70’s, while working for a school district, I helped strip and revarnish a gym floor with very bad ventilation & no masks. Three of us leaning against each other to exit the place to get outside. Body tingles for hours afterwards as the toxins wore off. OSHA, what OSHA?
Construction site inspections. Gotta hate the smells. After we left when we stopped at the gas station/convenience store before going back to the office I found straight cranberry juice cut the construction dust and odors. One time when doing a hangar inspection there was a small frog clinging to the wall, emitting a fluid. I was gasping to breathe too. The contractor said the frog came in by himself and could leave that way too. I collected up the frog and went outside and took frog to the tree line, Rinsed him off with my water jug before I set him down. He hopped away in a hurry. I did not go back inside. Frog and I were too smart to do that!
Oh my yes, the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in paint and adhesives a really mess people up. I knew a house painter once who after work, would go straight to a bar and drink. I asked him once why he did that. He told me quite seriously that the liquor knocked the edge off the high he got from the paint fumes. Never could figure out how hard liquor would do that. Cancer killed him and I have to wonder if it was all the paint fumes that caused it.
