On 26 January 1996, the Tank McNamara strip (sports-centered, in case anyone didn’t know) had the title character cover ESPN2’s latest extreme sport: Bungee Ice Fishing. “A 300-foot free fall toward a 30-foot-wide hole in the ice, then a plunge into the river’s icy depths for a split-second shot at a giant muskie!”
Tank remarked that this would be kind of hard, since the contestant’s arms were strapped to his sides. The publicist told him “It’s teeth-against-teeth, Tank. The Deuce’s core audience demands nothing less.”

A former friend had a good catch-all ESPN event: Amish rake-fighting.

I still want to see a combination of figure skating and sporting clays.

The Mayans never used their limbs for sports. You had to use your head or stomach to get the ball into the hoop.

I’m old enough to remember the early days of ESPN. They would air virtually any sporting event to fill airtime.

Maybe they’ll rerun some Olympic ribbon twirling.
