    When I looked up personality traits of bassets (AFTER I got 6-week old Barney) the book listed at the top “stubborn, disobedient.” But we could usually appeal to Barney’s love of hearing “good dog.” We only used “bad dog” at first. He hated hearing that and would woof at us. Later we said “Where’s my good dog?” Then he would get over whatever snit he was in. He was such a good, good dog. I’ll always miss him.

    I knew someone whose dog flunked obedience training. The dog was a pill to be around.
