I have found that it is best to plan on either help or take food & drink down with you.

Make sure you’re next to a piece of furniture you can use to pick yourself up again.

True. Almost three years ago, I fell on the floor and couldn’t get up on my own. I try hard to not end up on the floor.

I can’t even do knee bends, anymore, without holding onto something. And last year I fell over backward, pulling down snow hanging over the roof gutters — had a heck of a time standing back up — felt like fool thrashing in the snow.

The effort to get up ain’t pretty, nor graceful or very dignified. It’s best if children aren’t around because they may learn a whole new vocabulary in the process.

The other day I dropped a pill on the floor. It took me several minutes to decide if it was worth the time and effort to retrieve it.

Years ago you’d go to a dance and smoothly enact, “get down! Get back up again!”Today, no dance, and not so smooth when I attempt to get back up again.

I do a downward dog pose, bend my knees, grab the nearest piece of furniture, give up and take a nap.

You also know how old you are that when you are on the floor, you look around to see if there is something needing done while you are there…

But, having common sense and not a pickled brain Aunty, I do know. 1 Corinthians 13:11: Apostle Paul. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. Grow up old lady.

Penny: [Trying to get a very pregnant Bernadette to do some yoga with her] We go down.

[Penny squats down effortlessly, while Bernadette tries using the chair for assistance]

    Penny: Then back up.

[She comes back up, but Bernadette is stuck]

    Penny: And back up!

Bernadette: Yeah, hearing you is not the problem.

[Penny gets her cell phone and points it at Bernadette]

Bernadette: What are you doing? Put that thing away.

    Penny: Smile.

[Click. The picture makes Bernadette look like she’s going #2]

Or how out of shape. My 90-years-young mom can still do it! I could do it a lot more easily if I didn’t spend my life sitting around. I actually bought a stationary bike during the COVID lockdown, thinking I’d ride while I watched TV. That lasted about a week; now it sits in my living room & reproaches me…

I spent way too many hours sitting on the floor in front of TV when I was a kid.

I still do it. I am 73 years old. I have to sit on the floor. Plus I never just watch TV — I am reading a book or on the Internet or crocheting or something. On the floor. Many a time I have been visiting folks and I confuse them no end by just plunking down on the floor when invited to watch a movie or whatever. It just doesn’t seem natural to sit in a chair for TV.

if you visit japan, be prepared to sit on the floor if you plan to stay at a traditional inn. there are western-style rooms, of course, but most folks don’t want to pay for an experience they could have back home. so, do some exercises and build up those knees… ☺
