In Andy’s case, presumption of innocence is often a mistake.

The cop sounds like a “precog” from “The Minority Report” by Philip K. Dick. Good read if you can still find it.

45 years ago a summer cop in our tourist town attempted a “stop and frisk” on my person based on my previous track record. the problem was, we do not allow S&F in Ontario and he had no probably cause. So i said, ‘Lawyer’ ( a very rare statement in Ontario in those days) and he had to stop. He also had to take me to the cop shop and show cause to search me. His supervisor refused his request and another officer drove me back to the location of the stop. Saw the cop walking the beach a few days later and he looked at me really nasty. I said, “You’re new, and probably up from the city. OPP don’t attempt to just stop people thinking they will fold up here. Have a great summer”. Never saw him again.

Perkins was just being efficient. He knew he might have to go looking for him later and might as well run him in while Andy was close by.

The only thing the police man did wrong was be over eager. In two hours, it won’t have made a difference.
