During the pandemic and being stuck alone at home, with only the cat, I was talking to a girlfriend on the phone (yes, a landline). I told her I was thinking of stopping coloring my hair. She bawled me out and said we aren’t doing it for other people, we do it to make ourselves feel better. So I gave it one more try and guess what? I felt better. All that gray was making me look washed out, old and depressed. The cat however could care less, he just wanted his food.
I’ve never bothered coloring my hair. I’ll soon turn 77 and though the brown’s faded a bit, the gray is only now really visible (mostly on the sides).
This natural process has never ever bothered me. After all, my husband’s hair went gray about 20 years ago and now it’s a stunning silver (he’s 79). Also, I was fortunate enough to work in a health care profession in which gray hair seemed to equal wisdom to my patients.
Now and then, I do brag that I spend a fortune having the hairdresser bleach the color out of every second hair on my head one by one by one…
This reminds me of the “All in the Family” episode in which Michael didn’t want Gloria to take off a wig when he suggested a little activity. Unlike Janis, she was not pleased.
Last March I shaved my head. I had been planning it for a few months and had already purchased head scarfs. I still waited until spring. It has now been 11 months, and my hair is less than 2 inches long. Before I cut it off it was down to the middle of my back. I figured it would be short for a while. I just didn’t realize how long that “while” would be.
I’m thinking this may be a challenge for Jimmy, to add another color gradually to his depiction of Janis’ hair over the next few whatevers. I’m looking forward to it.
There was a story in Canada about a reporter who let her hair go to its current natural color which is grey/gray at this point and she was let go from her job. The network wanted her to color her hair so that she would look younger.
During 2020, since no one was going to see me much, I decided to see what color my natural hair is. During the “skunk stripe” stage, I used the temporary color spray you can buy anywhere, for when I needed to go to the store. Worked great, and I was blessed with the ‘Platinum Blond’ that Janis was hoping for! I figured if it was ugly, I could always cover it up again! The hubs loves it!
My wife’s aunt decided to let her hair go ‘natural’ sometime in her late 70s. She let her grow out a little ways to get a sense of what color it would eventually be and then had it dyed to match. She went from reddish brown to gray almost overnight.
I don’t color anymore but only have about 20% grey. Just an Italian thing I think. But if I had all grey and was letting it go natural I’d have it colored gray to avoid the grow out period.
Never dyed my hair or even thought to do so. I had my hair done for our wedding to make his mom happy, let the mess grow out and have not done anything other wash and brush my hair since.

Six to eight months in our world would be Labor Day, give or take a month. Could be tomorrow where the Days live.

Take a shortcut and buy her a wig Arlo. It will satisfy your curiosity.

Is he now gonna ask her to wear a wig in the bedroom? After all 6 months is a long time from now.

I’m not ready to stop coloring my hair, but I’ve thought of using a wig in the interim.

How long would you wait for Emmylou?

Hair grows about 1/2" a month. It’ll be over a year before all her old colored hair grows out.

One of my friends is a “California girl”, long blond hair. Bands of summer blond alternating with winter blond.

I don’t think my husband ever looks at my hair. Or my head, or at me for that matter.
