I lived in a second-floor apartment in Austin, Texas for several years. At one point, the neighbors on the third floor would be running around, making massive noise at 2 AM. One night, we suddenly had water coming through the ceiling in the shower area. I went upstairs to complain. Discovered the occupants were: a woman, her father, three teen-aged boys and two dogs. The boys were all wearing construction boots, and were racing around the apartment along with the dogs. The shower was running, but no one was using it, and someone had ripped the soap tray off the wall, which was where the leak to the floor below was coming from. I got them to at least turn off the shower, but the noise continued for the next few hours. The next day, I complained to the management office, and they immediately kicked the family out. Their grounds? The woman swore that it was just going to be her and her father; she wasn’t paying rent for everyone else.

I’m having flashbacks to a college apartment I once had. I never did figure out what the neighbors were always cooking that smelled so horrible.

A chicken coop is no elegantly scented rose garden. :)

A very real negative for apartment/condo dwellers. Oft times, depending on building construction, while scents are usually carried through a shared ventilation stack of some sort, noise can travel and be distorted in the most unpredictable ways.

If one lives in an apartment neighbors are part of the deal. I’ve had a few that I complained about, but on the whole, everybody seems to be aware of the old Paul Simon song, One Man’s Ceiling Is Another Man’s Floor".

I once had to move because everyone around me (above, below, to the sides) smoked and the smoke was constantly filtering into the apartment. I figured out it was through the heating system. I’m allergic to cigarette smoke. On cold winter days I would literally sneeze non-stop. Too bad, because otherwise my neighbors were pretty awesome.
