Many years ago, when learning to play golf, finding lost balls in the rough was the most fun I had (‘cause my score sure wasn’t). At the end of the game, if I had more balls than I started with, it was a good game.
When I played golf, I had an unwritten rule that I only looked for lost balls for about a minute. I often found other people’s lost balls in that time anyway and came out ahead by the end of the game. I did eventually get better and hit fewer balls into the woods.
My dad played golf from the age of 10 into his early 90s. Never in his entire life did he ever purchase a golf ball. He would go out in the rough and gather up abandoned balls. Our basement used to have buckets full of golf balls!
One Saturday I played at a golf course where the 3rd hole was 120 yards, with the tee area on one side of a pond and the hole around 30’ from the edge of the pond on the other side.
Between the green on 3 and the tee box on 4 there were two teenage guys sitting at a table selling balls they raked out of the pond for about half the price of brand new. They did a brisk business.
Only played golf once in my life.On a 9-hole course between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Shot unspeakably high. Found out the clubhouse had been flooded with calls to “get that slowpoke off the course”.I took the hint.

Having to pay the wholesale price for the golf balls?

Sounds like it’s gonna be a pretty interesting game.

I believe in the adage “The one with the fastest cart loses the fewest balls”…
