Sadly, most pirate loot couldn’t be buried. Merchant ships carried bulk cargoes like cloth or iron ingots. Places like Port Royal would buy the cargoes for just enough to keep the pirates in business.

Burying it might save it. And if there’s inflation, gold will keep its value. But an investment it ain’t.
