“A coward dies a thousand times before his death, but the valiant taste of death but once. It seems to me most strange that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come.”
There’s a nice short story by Franz Hohler on this topic: “A visit in hell”. People in hell live in a nice hotel complex, with parks and gardens everywhere. When the visitor asks the guide what the punishment is, the guide answers “Remember, the whole thing lasts forever.” The visitor asks “But what about the others? Those who go to Heaven?” The answer is “There is no Heaven. Their reward is that they’re allowed to die.”

Kind of sounds like the scene in “A Christmas Carol” where Marley leaves Scrooge.

Interesting idea. But who decides who’s good and who’s bad? Such conundrums make me glad I don’t believe in any of it.
