Theoretically, I think this could happen. I remember reading a Sci-Fi story where someone threw a pebble into a very cold, but as yet unfrozen lake, and the whole lake instantly froze. And a Google Search just now came up with this:
I was in Montana a few years ago during the winter. It was so cold outside that when I took a cup of hot water out and threw it up in the air, it froze so fast the ice was still warm when it came down.
Life as we know it is only possible on Earth because water expands below 4 degrees Celsius and even more as it freezes. Because of this one property, bodies of water freeze from the top down rather than the bottom up and life survives beneath the ice.

Good timing as it dropped 50 degrees in one day here. 71 degrees and got a winter weather alert.

Spring is sprung, so no ice fish here, except at the store! (Central PA)

Good excuse to learn how to walk. Well, that and how to breathe out of water. Of course, talking is a good start.

Every other day lately we get early spring, and on the opposite days we get dead of winter. It’s getting old – can we just go into spring now?

Yeah, snow and rain mix today. Yesterday sunny and clear. If it was colder it would have snowed about 6" today.
