From Not Always Right: Newspaper Sales Are Declining
(I’m sitting at work when my cell phone rings. It has rung at the same time every morning at work, and it is always the same people: the local newspaper, trying to sell me a subscription. I have asked the last three times to be taken off their list because I am not interested. I pick up the phone, and the following conversation ensues:)
Me: “Hello?”
Salesperson: “Hi, this is [Salesperson] from [Newspaper]. Now are you today?”
Me: “Honestly, not very good. You guys are calling me every day at work when I have repeatedly asked to be taken off your list because I’m really not interested. I am working, and I’m going to start getting in trouble for being on my phone.”
Salesperson: rudely “Look, this is my first time calling you; you don’t need to be getting mad at me. I’m just trying to do my job!”
Me: “I’m not mad at you, and I understand that you are doing your job. I’m just letting you know I’m really not interested. Is there any way to be removed from this call list?”
Salesperson: “Sure, okay… but would you be interested in—”
Me: talking over him “Well, now I’m mad!”
(I hung up and blocked their number. Should have done that in the first place!)
NOT my story, but recently I have had several calls from another area code here and I have been answering it. A definitely prerecorded woman’s voice starts up asking if I have Medicare part a or B. I just keep talking over the voice, never answering yes and eventually disconnecting & putting the number in my block list & reporting the type of spam it is.
Great journalists are nearly extinct. Now they just write propaganda for either side – mostly the loony left- and ignore anything that disturbs their little fiction. I used to love the newspaper but they are not worth reading anymore.
The Sunday funnies, post use by me, line the bottom of my bird cages. I think they enjoy a bit of colour. (I tried using the Op-Ed pages but they’d keep pooping on the picture of George Will.)
IN 1980 I took an intro journalism class thinking it might become my major. The professor stated prophetically that journalism was no longer about the facts, but about setting the agenda for the Country. Very scary thought to me. I changed my major.
Our “local” paper is no longer local since it combined with four other papers (maybe more). Subscription rate is over $2K a year. About the only time my town gets mentioned is if there’s a murder in it.

Don’t forget clipping coupons, bird cage paper, and doggie training paper.

I would use the papers to soak up excess cooking grease: a layer of newspaper, with just one paper towel on top.
