Fred seems to crave suffering. His kid hides his cigarettes and gets away with it. He goes to a bad neighbor to beg more cigarettes. He goes out in only pajamas on a frigid day and is obviously working on frostbite. This guy has real issues and needs more than a cigarette to help him.
@TimeWeaver, the drugs came later, and at the time of this strip he was actually dating Culture Club’s drummer, so it wasn’t exactly like “lock up your daughters” when they came to town. Motley Crue would have been a better punchline.

Tom’s retort is a well-placed zinger; Mr. Fred’s neighborhood is apparently not so friendly….

His daughter couldn’t be safer than with Boy George, actually, though I guess it wasn’t widely known then.

Right now Tom would probably like to shoot the guy who came up with the ad slogan, “I’d walk a mile for a Camel.”

Man, he’s really hurting if that’s all he could come up with.
Binkley would be the one to bring Boy George home, actually.
