It does work like that. Here, two noted personalities got fired from their show by a big local radio station overnight (in fact, one was called out of the studio while their last broadcast was still in progress). But it seems fitting that Tulsa Man’s Hand is to be found in the Closet of Anxieties!
I suspect that we all have a closet of anxieties and Opus and Binkley are not exceptional in that instance. Deal with them and don’t let them get you down and soon those creatures in the closet will get frustrated and leave you alone. I have a Zippo lighter on which is engraved “I have issues”. Each time I light the lighter one of my anxieties gets burned. [I don’t smoke by the way, I just have the lighter.]
I’m absolutely sure he got the idea to front a comic strip with a penguin from Steve Bell’s long-running “If…” in the Guardian (London). This also uses a penguin, In this case one who originally got to England from the Falkland Islands to express thanks to Margaret Thatcher (and then wised up) . The penguin then becomes the naive “other”, seeing Thatrcher’s Britain through alien eyes, and becomes politically radical.
AgProv:
Opus’ first appearance, 6/26/1981.
Falklands war, 1982.
There was a long running strip during the conflict where Opus tried to rescue his relatives.

Simplicity itself, The editors of your paper do not think tht it is funny or interresting or worth the money. They choose ot to run it.

That, and the fact that he stopped drawing it in 1989.

If the people of Tulsa are lucky, they won’t be subjected to Opus (the strip) either.

Sounds more like Mr. Bell got his idea from Opus.
