This comic reminds me of a very early Whoopie Goldberg sketch in which she portrayed a young black girl wearing a skirt on her head which was supposed to be her “long blonde hair”. This feels almost as poignant as that bit was, although Ronald-Ann has a little more self-awareness around the whole phenomenon.
According to the GoComics archive, this strip is from August 12, 1988. HB turned 22, 2 days later. Wikipedia says she moved to NY in 1989 to pursue an acting career, so she wasn’t known in 1988. CBS has been hyping a summer series, starring her, beginning Wednesday.
