1. In a Noo Yawk diner, you’d get a coffee with cream and sugar.
2. I sometimes ask for “the usual” in a restaurant I’ve never been to, just to confuse the server and see if they have a sense of humour.
3. I requested “the usual” in a deli I had never been to before (see #2) and it turns out they had a bunch of sandwiches on the menu with odd names. Including one called “the usual”.
4. I used to take business trips to various cities. Each would last a week. At one (Topeka maybe), I ordered something at a nearby ihop on Monday. On Tuesday, I had the same waitress. Just to see what she’d do, I said “I’ll have the usual” and she remembered what I had the day before and brought it to me!
5. You’ve been going for a while and don’t know the waitress by name? It’s not time to do the “I’ll have the usual” line.
I eat breakfast a few times a week at a dockside restaurant in Morro Bay. Often, by the time I come in through the door, the waitress saw me in the parking lot, placed my order, has a table setup outside and my extra napkins prepared. It’s nice being a regular with a “usual” but if I DON’T want to have breakfast (and just get espresso next door), I have to park out of sight. :)

You’d think for going there so often he’d know the server!
