When my wife was a retail pharmacist, one of the things she and the techs really liked were the special store discount coupons that could hand out at their discretion. These were like $10 off your purchase. When someone had a problem and was nice about it, they could give them a coupon if nothing else. The jerks got nothing.
Remember this next time you go into a store with a problem.
A employee at my office learned that the other day. About 20 customers stood outside our plainly marked “Closed” DMV office. So he went out to explain they needed to go to the nearby open office. Not one person was pleased or thanked him. Instead he was bombarded by personal attacks and even threatened by the governor being called for not letting them in for services. Even when there was no one to serve them as the office is closed. I just laughed….I stopped doing that weeks ago.
The full quote from Harry Selfridge is “The customer is always right, in matters of taste,” Which means that if they wanna buy an ugly hat, let them – they’re still buying it. Does not mean that staff have to agree to any and all demands.

Last time i was threatened with being reported to my boss, i told the complaintant my full name and said, “Spell it right!”
That threw them off their game.

For some reason, it is Ferengi rule of Acquisition #285,"No good deed ever goes unpunished."

That’s why most big stores have return desks.

I bet Penny would be happy to play along, hear out the customer, and “yell” at Shelby for trying to allow a return.
