It’s a toss-up between schmoozing the senior execs which has a very small chance of making any kind of difference in the long run- OR- feasting on the free food which won’t matter in the long run either but has an excellent chance of making this particular night one to remember. I say go for the food!
Our company events were in mid January. In a nearby city about 50km away. I went when I could, from 02 to when it was canceled in about 2014. Great food, entertainment, games usually themed, and company recognitions. I’d sign on as late as I could to hear the most recent weather forecasts; sometimes a winter storm with road closures. It was replaced by a modest cafeteria catered event, the reason given was that some people who registered didn’t attend and it was a cost. I never bought that, feeling it was just reducing the cost and bother
