I’ve heard them up close and personal many many times. There are some settings where they work, but when it comes to romantic evenings, I’m going with Barry White.
I haven’t found a single instrument that is tolerable when played poorly or out of tune. Likewise, I haven’t found a single instrument that sounds bad when in tune, played well, and playing music that I like.
When I was growing up in the previous century (or two), everything was fine. I have wondered when the skirling and screeching became de rigueur for this country. The sound of hot bearings running dry doesn’t add anything to any occasion. Just my opinion.
Once attended a Jewish wedding where bagpipes were played. Bride was Scottish and insisted some bagpipe music be played at her wedding. The music was played prior to the entrance of the bride and was very tasteful and well done. Anyone who attended still remembers the bagpipes.

I never imagined I would think that one day, but I’m going with the rats.

Bagpipes, an acquired taste

There are two kinds of people, those who like bagpipes, and those with no taste in music whatsoever.

Hamelin is in Germany; don’t think his magic pipe was a bagpipe.

Well, there are the battlefield pipes (Scottish) and the indoor pipes (Irish). Prefer the Scottish, makes the blood move.

In Scotland, they know you need several pipers working together to herd the rats out of town.

As a Highland Scot I love the pipes.

Throughout Hamelin people were heard saying how he just kept piping up.

He ended up using Decon. Same effect. :)

They sound a lot better if the piper can actually play them.
