The Unusual for me this coming morning, if you can: just a cup of Thundering Steppes Coffee (dig into one of the sealed packages of CocoMocha Makings if you have to). I plan to head off on a shopping trip in early daylight.

@Lonewolf: I don’t eat breakfast this early in the morning (when I normally write), and when I do get up I’m typically headed somewhere else. But if Ladywolf could kindly have Lewreader’s Special Egg Omlette (complete with Frank’s Hot Sauce) ready to go with the Thundering Steppes Coffee at 7:00 AM CDT, I’d be much obliged.

@Ladywolf: Thanks for your consideration. Meanwhile my boss, Master Starbright, will be coming in after me later this morning (you’ll recognize him when you see him, unless he’s wearing his Cloak of Shadow). He’ll be wanting some CocoMocha, and he’d have breakfast too except that he really doesn’t need food or drink at all…

    Good morning Trube

I’m off work today, having picked up Taffy from the SPCA’s spay and neuter clinic this morning. She’s in good shape and a little active…but not bouncy like she usually is. I have some pain meds for her. I took the day off to be with her in case she gets uncomfortable. She is also microchipped. Right now she doesn’t want to stay in my lap, or for that matter, stay stil, but she’s not fully awake.

I’m taking advantage of the time to make some bean soup. Should be ready about 6pmish and I’ll wheel a vat into the BTchowdown room.

Ya’ll have a great day. I’ll be popping in here and there.

Or, if I want the url to show, and has one or more underlines (why take chances?) I “disable” the underlines with a backslash (\), as this: gobbledygook\_yadda.com.

I find the easiest way to learn something–like the format guide–is to know it’s there, and then when I really want to do something, figure it out and use it several times until it clicks…and then wait until I want another tidbit.

bmonk - Yep, if I’m forced to consult a computer manual, that’s my method. So much easier to retain the information if it doesn’t all go into short-term at the same time.

That’s true enough, but there’s more: When something is relevant and I can use it immediately, I learn it much more quickly and thoroughly.

Which is why I then try to find more places (and reasons) to use it. Stretch the mind, keep it focused.

Just been having fun at I Write Like that was linked to over at Pibgorn. I evidently write like James Joyce and H.P. Lovecraft, plus others like Dan Brown and Stephen King.

(But the Dan Brown may be an error: that was directions on how to get to a place, and what to do once there. So the style was much more choppy, short sentences and factual than my normal style. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)

bmonk - I haven’t read Dan Brown, but if I remember correctly what he wrote about, I would assume you wouldn’t take the same viewpoint. Writing style? Well, since I haven’t read him, I wouldn’t know about that. I just feel more like Martha - too many things to do with the hours I have available. I just try to make sure I reserve time to do as Mary.

No, Mr. Brown and I don’t exactly see eye to eye. I recall one Dan Brown plot generator, which generated plots that somehow always seemed to include the “Vatican conspiracy to take over the world”.

Now, I have a certain fondness for conspiracy theories, if they are well-baked, but really: the Vatican showed they can’t even run the Papal States, or a modern bank. How could they possibly run a conspiracy, or take over the world? No, the Church should stick to what we have at least a hope of doing (and where the Spirit will support us in our efforts): the salvation of souls.

bmonk - I have been told I’m extremely analytical. Sojo - I probably should try that, but what I just did was to find 3 more samples to test it. They all came out as Stephen King. I haven’t written a lot on a regular basis (and saved the results), so that pretty much exhausts my recent samples. Maybe that explains why it is so horrifying for the males in my family to listen to me?

Sojo - Okay, now I tried an interesting experiment. I took a 3 paragraph sample (fairly long paragraphs). When I put all three paragraphs it said “Isaac Asimov”. I deleted the last of the 3 paragraphs, still Isaac. When I left only the first paragraph, it came up with “Chuck Palahniuk”. Who is HE?

I just kept using different texts from various things, including an old homily I had in my pocket, plus a text I made up ad hoc. Lovecraft and Joyce ran neck and neck, plus a few others (Stephen King and Dan Brown), which may have been a result of the genre.

On the basis of my latest speculative fiction text, I write like Stephen King. Well, that text was more horrific than usual (I mean in content, not in writing style).

On the basis of the prior chapter, I write like H.P. Lovecraft.

On the basis of this apologetics Commentary, I write like Dan Brown.

So much for statistical analysis of word usage. This only illustrates what I’ve been saying for a long time: one uses different vocabulary for different purposes, while remaining the same author. That pretty much puts most of liberal literary criticism of the Bible in the waste bin where it belongs.
