You just need to plant enough bulbs to completely cover the area. The squirrels and rabbits eat them, along with moles and bugs. But, they grow and would be overcrowded without this. I don’t have to dig them up every three years and split them, the critters take care of it nicely. And, this is after they have been in the ground and doing well for over 30 years.

They are digging in my pots, so I made cages for the pots to keep them out. Also keeps them from my strawberries.
