They aren’t afraid of you. It’s the apex predator behind you. Several years ago, I was driving in Newfoundland, when I saw a moose standing in the middle of the highway ahead of me. I stopped a safe distance from him and waited for him to move. Eventually he ambled into the woods, but I don’t think that my little Prius scared him off. It was probably the semi coming up behind me!
