After we humans wipe ourselves out, my money’s on either squirrels or raccoons to replace us as the next intelligent, tool-using species on Earth. We’ve been training them with food rewards to solve ever-more-complicated puzzles, and simple evolutionary theory says that the ones who are good at it will survive, thrive, and reproduce. Right now, my money’s on the cōōns, because they’ve got a head start in the opposable-thumb department, but maybe the arboreal capacities of the tree rats will offset it. Sadly, I won’t be around to see how it all turns out.

What the heck happened to Monty’s face in panel 5? Is that meant to be his tongue in his cheek?

As I read this comic, a dozen squirrels are hunting for peanuts in the backyard. Too cute.

My favorite Monty cartoons are those in which he interacts with squirrels. Have many saved.
