Henry Deringer, who invented the famous single-shot pistol, spelled his name with one “R”.And though he was an expert gunsmith, he wasn’t much of a businessman. He never patented his creation. This led to imitations, often spelled with two "R"s.
I once had some work done on a neglected semi-auto target pistol. When I took it to the range, it fired 3 rounds at once. The gunsmith fixed that, but I never did learn what the problem was. Must’ve been that the automatic firing screw needed adjustment. :-)

Derringers have so little firepower that they are mostly good for hurting yourself.
