I wonder if he ‘got’ all the cartoons?

My dear Grandfather had an air mail subscription to the New Yorker. I remember as a youth seeing them and wondering about the U.S. While I enjoyed looking at the cartoons, I could never understand them.

I liked the Saul Steinberg cartoons. I still have a couple of books of them.

All you folks from 2009 are wrong, he’s not reading the cartoons, he’s reading Pauline Kael’s movie reviews.

This is a rare instance where Sherpa is late. Or maybe it’s just Stel Bel napping, or Nighthawks is still putting his face on.

Hi Dennis…. and everybody on the way…. which apparently includes Cleo.

We came here to post our comments on what is _probably a lovely poster or some such. by StelBel…

on the Feb 5th  2019 “CLEO and COMPANY”

But as of 11pm Pacific, yesterday’s strip is still up on Sherpa.

By the time some of you get here later, the new one may be up at

A lot of the dogs on Ballard Street seem to like to read…. whether or not they actually understand the words.

    Scooter can, I’m sure…..

though it doesn’t really matter to him, cos he, in particular, has a somewhat secret agenda…..

    Okay… there we have it!

Indeed, another lovely poster from Stel… and for a movie I loved, adapted from a book I loved….

    Ally Walkie’s “The Color Purplie.”

(I don’t think it’s really “The Color PuЯplie”)

Wow… the purplie curtains really make it…. and the lace, and even the cute little sign painter…. could that be our Cleo, in a cameo?

    Watch your tail, Celie!

It’s a beautiful story… to me, it’s about even more than biscuits and kibble….

but I guess I’m still looking at it from a human perspective. Dogs have slightly different priorities.

I believe it was Whoopie Pie Goldbasset’s first film… and she did a beautiful job.

None of the tail-wagging, mugging or mannerisms she later adopted.

And the poster doesn’t mention that it was also a first film appearance by Ol’Pal Windfree.

The humans copied it… of course…. and I see they used a more human-centric agenda in the tagline.

Even if that would appeal to me… it’s just not as heartwarming or sympathetic without all those big brown basset eyes.

Okay, I won’t mention the title of this movie. But I can mention that Steven Spielbasset is one great director. I always enjoy his work. Did you notice his promo for his next film? Yeah, it’s right there in the center of the poster………that big gold round globe. Empire of the Sun. It wasn’t about kibble and biscuits, though.
