I think Dad forgets on purpose.

I had a friend in high school whose name, so far as anybody knew, was Gus. That is, until the day the substitute teacher called the role and said, “Gustavus Adolphus P_____?”

My husband knew a guy in High School who went by Ted or Teddy. At graduation the name Theodotious Alfonze was called. My husband said you could hear mouths drop open.

Copernicus. Love it. Often wondered. Thanks, Dad.

Dad is becoming more inventive in his names for Spud. Copernicus, indeed!

I love this runner…especially here. At this point he’s really loosing it .

Copernicus is the best name that Dad has come up with yet.

We have a local candidate running by the name of Ron Moe. I bet he had a tough time in school when the teacher called roll, last name first… and no, this is not a joke. I may vote for him just out of sympathy.

A lot of kids are sensitive about their name!

With a son named Sterling, dad has a knack for names.

Copernicus? How about Galileo? Kepler? Descatets or Newton? Maybe he’s saving those names for next time.

“I doubt it, Dad. He’s been dead since 1543.”

Copernicus is a great name — just not for a kid at this point in history.

I swear, the man spends those long hours on that boat of his just trying to think up new ways to get Spud’s name wrong.

And he also answers to Spudorama, Spudtula, Spudghetti, All-seeing Spud…

Dad never “remembering” Spud’s name just because he knows it annoys Wallace is my favorite running gag.

Though Copurnicus really isn’t too bad a name…..

I am fairly new to this strip, still figuring things out, but I’m loving it. In reading through the comments, I’m seeing folks saying, “So THAT’S his real name,” but then others that imply this is a running joke, Dad coming up with names for Spud just to annoy Wallace. So a question for the old-timers, or even Mr. Henry (and I love it that he interacts with fans here): am I accurately reading between the lines that Copernicus is NOT his real name? And thank you.

He also answers to “Sweet Butter Spud”.
